This guide is for anyone with a new Brane X. By the end, your speaker is on, paired with your phone over Bluetooth, added to the Brane Audio app, and connected to Wi-Fi.
What you need
- Your Brane X portable speaker
- A USB-C charger capable of delivering a suggested 75W (15V, 5A), with 45W (15V, 3A) as a minimum
- A phone or tablet (iOS or Android) with Bluetooth
- The name and password of the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to use (optional, for Wi-Fi features)
Plug in and power on
- Plug the USB-C charger into an outlet and the power port on the back of the speaker. While the Brane X is fully portable, we suggest leaving it plugged in during setup and letting it charge.
- If your speaker does not boot up after being plugged in, you should see an orange LED on the front of the Brane X. Press the power button on the back of the speaker to begin boot up.
- Press the power button on the back of the speaker.
- While booting up, three white LEDs will appear, followed by a pumping sound. That sound is normal: it indicates that the Repel-Attract Driver (RAD), the source of our deep bass, is moving out of its parked position and pressurizing.
Before we continue setup, use the two sections below to familiarize yourself with the Brane X.
Meet the Control Bar
The Control Bar is the row of six touch buttons on top of the speaker. From left to right they are: Bluetooth, Bass, Volume down, Volume up, Microphone Mute, and Alexa. Some buttons have additional behavior depending on duration held and whether they are pressed in combination. For every function available, read Control Bar buttons.
Meet the LED Bar
Four lights on the front of the speaker communicate the speaker’s current state. The most common are solid orange (charging), pulsing blue (Bluetooth pairing mode), solid blue (Bluetooth connected) and solid white (connected to Wi-Fi).
If you see a light you do not recognize, check the LED legend.
Step 1: Pair your phone over Bluetooth
- Check the LEDs on the front of your speaker.
- Press the Bluetooth button, the first button on the left of the Control Bar. The blue light starts pulsing and the speaker says “Bluetooth pairing mode”.
- Open the Bluetooth settings on your phone and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Select your speaker in the list of devices. It is called “Brane-” followed by its serial number.
- Wait for the speaker to announce the connection. The blue light turns solid.
You can already play music at this point. Bluetooth works without Wi-Fi and without the app, so it is also the connection to use away from home. More in Connect over Bluetooth.
Step 2: Open the Brane Audio app
- Download the Brane Audio app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
- Open it and create your account.
- Keep your phone connected to the speaker over Bluetooth. The app finds the speaker over Bluetooth and adds it to the speaker list. This needs firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly instead (see Method 2 (Legacy) in Connect to Wi-Fi), then update the firmware.
With the speaker in the app, you can change its settings, such as the equalizer, light brightness and speaker name. Settings work over Bluetooth, so you do not need Wi-Fi for them. See Speaker settings in the Brane Audio app.
If the app does not show your speaker, see Fix speaker discovery during setup, or add it over Wi-Fi directly with Method 2 (Legacy) in Connect to Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Add Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is optional, but it unlocks the rest of what Brane X can do: AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Alexa, speaker groups and stereo pairs, and firmware updates.
- Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to join.
- In the speaker list, tap your speaker.
- Follow the on-screen steps to connect it to your network. If no Wi-Fi prompt appears, go to Network > Connect to Network.
When the white light on the front turns solid and the speaker says “Wi-Fi configured”, you are connected. From then on the speaker rejoins that network whenever it is powered on.
Let the first firmware update finish
A new speaker may not have the latest firmware. If an update is available, it starts by itself a few moments after the speaker first joins Wi-Fi. We recommend keeping the speaker plugged in while it updates.
- A solid yellow light means an update is in progress.
- The speaker restarts by itself to finish the update, so do not worry if it turns off and on.
- When the yellow light is gone, the speaker is up to date.
To check for an update yourself, select your speaker in the app and open Firmware. More in Update your speaker’s firmware.
Use AUX for sources without wireless
For a source that has no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, such as a record player, plug a 3.5mm cable into the AUX input on the back of the speaker. See Connect with an AUX cable.
What to do next
- Connect Brane X to your TV
- Play across multiple speakers
- Set up Alexa
