This article is for you if the Brane Audio app cannot find your Brane X during setup. There are two ways to add a speaker: over Bluetooth, which is the usual route, and over Wi-Fi directly. Start with the section for the route you are using. If one route keeps failing, try the other.
If the app does not find the speaker over Bluetooth
In the usual setup, you pair your phone with the speaker over Bluetooth and the app then adds the speaker to the speaker list. If it does not appear, work through these checks.
- Check the first light on the front of the speaker. Solid blue means a device is connected over Bluetooth. If it is pulsing blue or off, pair your phone first. See Connect over Bluetooth.
- Make sure the connected device is the phone that runs the app. Brane X connects to one Bluetooth device at a time, so a tablet or computer that connected first keeps your phone out.
- Wait until the speaker has finished starting up. Dim white lights just after power-on mean it is still starting.
- Make sure you have the latest version of the Brane Audio app, then close the app and open it again.
- Disconnect and reconnect: press the Bluetooth button on the speaker to disconnect, then connect again from your phone’s Bluetooth settings.
The app finds a speaker over Bluetooth only when the speaker runs firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly, as described next, then update the firmware so the app can find it over Bluetooth in future. See Update your speaker’s firmware.
If you are adding the speaker over Wi-Fi directly (Legacy)
In this route you tap the plus button in the speaker list and the app searches for a speaker in Wi-Fi setup mode.
Check the Wi-Fi light
The speaker can only be found this way while it is in Wi-Fi setup mode. A pulsing (flashing) white light on the front tells you it is.
- Pulsing white: the speaker is ready to be found. Go to the next check.
- Solid purple: the speaker is not connected to Wi-Fi and is not in setup mode. Press and hold the Bluetooth button for about 5 seconds, until the speaker says “Wi-Fi ready to configure” and the white light starts pulsing.
- Solid white: the speaker is already on a Wi-Fi network. Connect your phone to that network and look for the speaker in the speaker list. To move it to a different network, hold the Bluetooth button until you hear “Wi-Fi ready to configure”.
Setup mode switches itself off after 15 minutes. If the white light has stopped pulsing while you were working through setup, hold the Bluetooth button again to turn it back on.
Check your phone’s Wi-Fi
- Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to join. The phone must be on Wi-Fi, not mobile data.
- Make sure you have the latest version of the Brane Audio app.
Refresh device discovery
Phones keep a short-lived list of the devices they have seen on the network, and that list can go stale. Turning airplane mode on and then off again clears it.
- Turn airplane mode on, then off again.
- Wait for the phone to rejoin your Wi-Fi network.
- Try the search again.
Search again in the app
- Open the Brane Audio app and go to the speaker list.
- Tap the plus button. The app searches for your speaker.
- Select the speaker and follow the on-screen steps.
When the speaker has joined the network, the white light stops pulsing and stays solid. From then on it rejoins that network whenever it is powered on. If a firmware update is available, it starts shortly afterwards and the light turns yellow.
If you are using the iOS Wi-Fi settings
On an iPhone or iPad you can also add the speaker from Settings > Wi-Fi, under the heading “Set up new AirPlay speaker”, which sits below the list of nearby networks. The speaker must be in Wi-Fi setup mode, with the white light pulsing.
- That section can take a few moments to fill in. Give it time before you assume the speaker is missing.
- If it has not appeared after a few minutes, confirm the white light is still pulsing and that your device is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- If setup stalls or cannot find the speaker, turn airplane mode on and off as described above, then start again.
If the speaker is found but does not join Wi-Fi
A red light for 5 seconds means the speaker hit an error while joining the network. Check the Wi-Fi password, move the speaker closer to your router, restart the router and speaker, then run the Wi-Fi step again.
