This article is for anyone adding a Brane X to a home Wi-Fi network, for the first time or after moving it to a new network. It covers the three ways to do it and what the lights tell you along the way. At the end, the speaker shows a solid white light and is ready for AirPlay, Spotify Connect and the rest.

What Wi-Fi unlocks

Bluetooth and the AUX input work without Wi-Fi, and so do the speaker settings in the Brane Audio app once your phone is connected to the speaker over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi adds:

  • AirPlay 2 from Apple devices, including an Apple TV
  • Spotify Connect
  • Alexa
  • Speaker groups and stereo pairs
  • Firmware updates

Before you start

  1. Turn the speaker on and wait for it to finish starting up.
  2. Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network you want the speaker to join.

Method 1: From the speaker in the Brane Audio app (iOS and Android)

This is the method we recommend. It uses the Bluetooth connection between your phone and the speaker, so the speaker does not need to be in Wi-Fi setup mode.

  1. Pair your phone with the speaker over Bluetooth. See Connect over Bluetooth.
  2. Open the Brane Audio app. The app finds the speaker over Bluetooth and adds it to the speaker list.
  3. Tap your speaker.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to connect it to your network. If no Wi-Fi prompt appears, go to Network > Connect to Network.

Method 2: Add it over Wi-Fi directly (Legacy)

Use this method if the app does not find the speaker over Bluetooth. The speaker has to be in Wi-Fi setup mode.

  1. Check for a pulsing white light on the front of the speaker. That means it is in Wi-Fi setup mode.
  2. If the light is not pulsing white, press and hold the Bluetooth button for about 5 seconds, until the speaker says “Wi-Fi ready to configure” and the white light starts pulsing.
  3. In the Brane Audio app, tap the plus button in the speaker list. The app searches for your speaker.
  4. Select your speaker when it appears and follow the on-screen steps. They look slightly different on iOS and Android.
  5. Wait for the confirmation screen.

A speaker that has never been on Wi-Fi enters setup mode by itself each time it is powered on. Setup mode ends after 15 minutes, or when you hold the Bluetooth button again. If you end it with the button, the speaker stops entering setup mode at power-on, and you start it with the button from then on.

Method 3: iOS Wi-Fi settings (iPhone and iPad only)

Brane X uses Apple’s AirPlay 2, so an iPhone or iPad can add a speaker that is in Wi-Fi setup mode without the app.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device and tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Scroll below the list of nearby networks to the heading “Set up new AirPlay speaker”. It can take a few moments to appear.
  3. Select your Brane X.
  4. Confirm when the dialog appears and wait for the confirmation screen.

The speaker then shows up in the Brane Audio app as well.

What the network light tells you

  • Pulsing white: setup mode. The speaker is ready to be added.
  • Solid yellow: the speaker is joining the network.
  • Solid white: connected. The speaker also says “Wi-Fi configured”.
  • Solid purple: not connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Red for 5 seconds: something went wrong while connecting. Run the setup again.

Once connected, the speaker rejoins the network by itself whenever it is powered on. A solid yellow light on the first light shortly after the first connection usually means a firmware update has started. See Update your speaker’s firmware.

Naming and passwords during Apple setup

Apple’s setup screens let you rename the speaker and give it an AirPlay password. Both have lasting effects, so we suggest leaving them unchanged during setup and naming the speaker in the Brane Audio app afterwards (tap the pencil icon next to its name at the top of its settings screen).

AirPlay password

If you set a password, anyone connecting to the speaker over AirPlay is asked for it. To remove the password, do one of the following:

Locked speaker name

If you name the speaker in Apple’s setup screens or in the Home app, the name is locked to Apple’s system. The Brane Audio app then shows a lock icon instead of the pencil icon and does not let you edit the name, because Apple’s system would overwrite the change. To rename a locked speaker, change its name in the Apple Home app. To remove the lock completely, factory reset the speaker and set it up again without entering a name in Apple’s screens.

Manage saved networks

Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app and go to Network > Saved Networks. It lists the Wi-Fi networks the speaker has saved and lets you delete the ones you no longer want. To move the speaker to a different network, hold the Bluetooth button for about 5 seconds to put it back in Wi-Fi setup mode, then onboard it while your device is connected to the desired network.

If the speaker is not found

See Fix speaker discovery during setup. For every light color and pattern, see the LED legend.
