The Control Bar is a row of six touch buttons on top of your Brane X, plus a power button on the back. This is a reference for every press and hold.
Buttons, left to right
1. Bluetooth
- Press: while a device is connected, a press disconnects it. With no device connected, a press turns Bluetooth pairing mode on or off. Pairing mode ends on its own after 3 minutes.
- Hold for 5 seconds or more: turns Wi-Fi setup mode on or off. The speaker says “Wi-Fi ready to configure” when it is on.
2. Bass
- Press: announces the current bass level (Low, Medium or High). Press again within 15 seconds to cycle Low, Medium, High and back to Low. After 15 seconds, the next press announces the level again instead of changing it. If Voice Announcements is off in the app, the Bass button only changes the level while music is playing.
- Hold for 5 seconds or more: resets the equalizer.
3. Volume down and 4. Volume up
- Press: changes the volume by one step.
- Hold: after a brief pause, the volume moves in larger steps, repeating until you let go.
- Press and hold both: the speaker announces its battery level, in 5% steps.
- Hold both through the countdown: starts a factory reset. See Factory reset your speaker.
5. Microphone
- Press: turns the microphones off or on. The red light on top of the speaker is on when they are off.
- Hold for more than 10 seconds: disables all the buttons temporarily (firmware 2.1 and later). The speaker says “Buttons disabled” and the Bluetooth light turns solid purple. The buttons stay disabled only until the speaker is next turned off. Turn it off and on again with the power button to get them back.
For a lasting option, see “Turn the buttons off” below.
6. Alexa
- Press: starts a conversation with Alexa without saying the wake word, called tap to talk. It also silences an Alexa alarm or timer that is sounding.
Power button
The power button is on the back of the speaker.
- Press: turns the speaker on or off.
- Hold for 10 seconds: forces the speaker to power off. Use this if the speaker is stuck while starting up (the three white lights never go away), seems not to turn on, or has frozen. Then press the button again to turn it back on.
Turn the buttons off
There are two ways to disable the touch buttons. They behave differently.
Touch Controls, in the app
Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, go to Advanced Settings and turn off Touch Controls. This is useful in public or around water that could splash the speaker. The setting stays through power cycles, so make sure the speaker is on your network or paired over Bluetooth before you turn the buttons off.
If the buttons are off and you cannot reach the speaker in the app, you can turn them back on with the power button:
- Turn the speaker on.
- Turn it off again as soon the speaker boots up.
- Repeat this 5 times. The touch buttons then turn back on.
Hold the Microphone button, for a short time
Holding the Microphone button for more than 10 seconds disables the buttons only until the speaker is power cycled. Use this when you only need the buttons off for a while.
Accessibility Mode
With Accessibility Mode on, the touch buttons behave differently. See Accessibility Mode.
While the speaker starts up
The buttons do not respond until the speaker has finished starting. The microphone button is the one exception. If the speaker never finishes starting, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it off, then turn it on again.
