Getting started

FAQ

How do I set up my Brane X for the first time?

  1. Plug the power adapter into an outlet and into the AC port on the back of the speaker. Your speaker arrives with some charge, but finishing setup on wall power keeps it from running out mid-process.
  2. Press the power button on the back of the speaker and wait for the launch sound.
  3. Download the Brane Audio app from the App Store or Google Play and create an account.
  4. Press the Bluetooth button on the Control Bar, then pair your phone with the speaker in your phone's Bluetooth settings. A solid blue light means the connection is made.
  5. Open the Brane Audio app. It discovers your speaker over Bluetooth if the speaker runs firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly, then update the firmware.
  6. To put the speaker on Wi-Fi, make sure your phone is on the network you want, tap the speaker in the speaker list and follow the onboarding instructions. If no Wi-Fi prompt appears, go to Network > Connect to Network.

When the speaker joins Wi-Fi, the white light turns solid. A new speaker may then start a firmware update on its own, which the yellow light shows. Wi-Fi is optional for Bluetooth and AUX playback and for changing settings, but AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Alexa, grouping and firmware updates need it.

You can also skip Bluetooth and add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly. Check that the front light is pulsing white (if it is purple, hold the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the speaker says "Wi-Fi ready to configure"), then tap the plus sign in the speaker list and follow the prompts. See How do I add my speaker to the Brane Audio app? for more.

What happens when I turn on my Brane X?

You will hear a short launch sound while the Repel-Attract Driver (RAD) starts up. This is normal on every power-on. On firmware 2.1 and later, all the lights on the front glow low-brightness white while the speaker boots. On earlier firmware you see a single solid white light.

Once it is ready, the speaker announces its battery level. It also announces the bass level unless bass is on High, which is the default. A speaker that has never been set up on Wi-Fi then says "Wi-Fi ready to configure," and its white light pulses. You can ignore this and pair your phone over Bluetooth instead.

The buttons on the Control Bar do not respond until the speaker is ready. The microphone mute button works at any time.

What do the buttons on the Control Bar do?

The Control Bar is a row of six touch buttons on top of the speaker. From the Bluetooth end:

  • Bluetooth: starts Bluetooth pairing, or disconnects the device that is connected. Hold it for 5 seconds to switch Wi-Fi setup mode on or off.
  • Bass: press once to hear the current bass level, then press again to cycle Low, Medium and High. Hold it for 5 seconds to reset the EQ.
  • Volume down and Volume up: make the speaker quieter or louder. Press both together to hear the battery level. Keep holding both to start a factory reset.
  • Mic: turns the built-in microphones off and on. A red light means they are off.
  • Alexa: starts a conversation with Alexa, or silences an Alexa timer or alarm that is sounding.

Does Brane Audio have an app for the Brane X?

Yes, the Brane X can be set up and managed through the Brane Audio app. Use the app to connect the Brane X to Wi-Fi, adjust EQ and bass levels, group multiple Brane X speakers, manage Amazon Alexa, and customize speaker settings.

Do I need the Brane Audio app to set up the Brane X?

Brane X does not require the Brane Audio app for basic Bluetooth or AUX playback. The app is needed to connect the speaker to Wi-Fi and access features such as custom EQ, speaker grouping, Alexa setup, network settings, and firmware updates.

Can I set up my speaker with an iPhone or an Android phone?

Yes, both iOS and Android phones are compatible. Download the Brane Audio app from the App Store or Play Store and follow the app onboarding instructions. The Brane X supports UPnP on Wi-Fi for Android users.

Recommended free apps: MediaMonkey, BubbleUPnP, and Hi-Fi Cast. For a more comprehensive experience, the paid app AirMusic ($5.99) streams content over UPnP, including Apple Music and Amazon Music.

How do I add my speaker to the Brane Audio app?

Connect via Bluetooth

First pair your mobile device to the speaker via Bluetooth. A solid blue light indicates that a Bluetooth connection has been established.

Setting up a brand-new speaker from the box? The first-time setup steps cover power, the Brane Audio app and Wi-Fi in order.

Download the Brane Audio app

The Brane Audio app will automatically discover your speaker over Bluetooth if it is running firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly instead, then update the firmware. Once it is connected over Bluetooth, you can change the speaker's settings in the app even without Wi-Fi.

Connect Speaker to Wi-Fi (optional)

If your speaker has auto-joined app, it can now be added to your Wi-Fi network. Grouping and firmware updates need Wi-Fi, as do AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Alexa.

Make sure that your mobile device is connected to the Wi-Fi network that you would like to connect your speaker to.

In the speaker list, tap the speaker you would like to connect to Wi-Fi, then follow the onboarding instructions to connect it to your network.

If a Wi-Fi connection prompt does not show, navigate to Network > Connect to Network, and follow the onboarding instructions.

A solid white light will show on the front of the speaker after it has successfully connected to Wi-Fi. From this point on, the speaker will automatically join the network whenever possible.

For more information on connectivity with the Brane Audio app, view the Brane X user guide.

Or add it over Wi-Fi directly

If you prefer, skip Bluetooth and add the speaker over Wi-Fi. See How do I connect my speaker to Wi-Fi?

What do the speaker list, Groups and Resources tabs do in the Brane Audio app?

The Brane Audio app has three tabs along the bottom of the screen.

  • The speaker list: view and add the Brane X speakers on your network. Open a speaker to see its settings, which are titled with the speaker's name.
  • Groups: create and manage speaker groups on your Wi-Fi network. Tap Create New Group to start one. A group screen shows the group name, a Party and Stereo selector, the member speakers, a "Speaker not playing?" link and an End Group link.
  • Resources: Product Warranty (Warranty Registration), Data & Privacy, Legal, Help & Contact and App Info. Help & Contact has the support email address, the Help Center and Submit Support Ticket.

Inside a speaker's settings you will find Ping Speaker, Network, Bluetooth, Sound Settings, EQ, Input Options, Voice Assistant, Streaming (which points you to Spotify), LED Brightness, Speaker Language, Accessibility, Firmware, Advanced Settings and Speaker Details, plus Reset Speaker, which shows the instructions for how to factory reset the speaker. See Factory reset your speaker.

You need the app to change settings, and that works over Bluetooth. Once your speaker is connected and configured, you do not need the app for everyday listening.

Why did my new Brane X start updating after I connected it to Wi-Fi?

A new speaker may not have the latest firmware. A few moments after it joins Wi-Fi for the first time, it checks for an update and starts installing it automatically. A solid yellow light shows while the update runs. It helps to keep the speaker plugged in.

The speaker restarts by itself when the update finishes, so do not worry if it turns off and on. When the yellow light is gone, your speaker is up to date. You can also check for updates yourself by opening your speaker in the Brane Audio app and going to Firmware.

What does Ping Speaker do?

Ping Speaker makes the speaker play a sound and flash its lights, so you can tell which speaker you have selected. This is useful when you have more than one Brane X. Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Ping Speaker.
