Brane X
Overview
What is the Brane X?
Brane X is a portable wireless smart speaker with a built-in RAD subwoofer. It combines deep sub-bass with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, Amazon Alexa, a rechargeable battery, and an IP57-rated enclosure.
What makes the Brane X different from other speakers?
Brane X is different because it uses patented Repel-Attract Driver technology to place a true subwoofer inside a compact portable speaker. It reaches down to 27.1 Hz while also delivering full-range mids and highs, four 50 W Class D amplifiers (200 W in total), an IP57-rated enclosure, and up to 12 hours of battery life.
Is the Brane X just a subwoofer?
No, Brane X is not just a subwoofer. It is a full-range speaker with a built-in RAD subwoofer, two midrange drivers, and two tweeters, allowing one unit to reproduce deep bass, vocals, instruments, and high frequencies.
Does the Brane X play mids and highs, or just bass?
Yes, Brane X plays clear mids and highs in addition to deep bass. It is a full-range speaker with one RAD subwoofer, two midrange drivers, and two dome tweeters.
Can the Brane X replace a home stereo?
Yes, Brane X can replace a traditional home stereo for many rooms and listening setups. One speaker delivers full-range sound with built-in sub-bass, while two Brane X speakers can be paired for a wider left-and-right stereo system.
Is the Brane X good for outdoor parties?
Yes, Brane X is well suited for outdoor parties. It has an IP57-rated enclosure, up to 12 hours of battery life, four 50 W Class D amplifiers (200 W in total), and deep bass that reaches down to 27.1 Hz.
Is the Brane X good for large rooms?
Yes, Brane X can deliver full-range sound in large rooms, and its EQ can be adjusted for the space through the Brane Audio app. For wider coverage, you can group up to eight Brane X speakers over Wi-Fi.
Sound and RAD technology
Does the Brane X have a built-in subwoofer?
Yes, Brane X has a built-in Repel-Attract Driver, or RAD, subwoofer that reaches down to 27.1 Hz. Dedicated midrange drivers and tweeters deliver clear, full-range sound across the rest of the frequency range.
How low does the Brane X bass go?
Brane X reaches down to 27.1 Hz, extending deep into the sub-bass range. Its RAD subwoofer produces low frequencies that most compact portable speakers cannot reach.
How loud is the Brane X?
Brane X reaches up to 98.9 dB and uses four Class-D amplifiers with more than 200 watts of combined output. Up to eight speakers can also be grouped for larger rooms or events.
Is the Brane X's RAD technology patented?
Yes, Brane X and its Repel-Attract Driver technology are protected by multiple issued and pending patents.
What is the Repel-Attract Driver (RAD)?
RAD is Brane Audio's proprietary speaker driver technology. It uses a magnetic negative spring to cancel the air pressure forces inside an enclosure, letting compact, battery-powered speakers produce deep sub-bass.
What is Hofmann's Iron Law?
Hofmann's Iron Law states that a loudspeaker must trade off low-frequency extension, enclosure size, and efficiency. Deep bass has traditionally required either a large cabinet or high power.
What is a magnetic negative spring?
A magnetic negative spring produces a force in the same direction as displacement, rising linearly with distance. In RAD, it offsets the air spring inside the enclosure, cutting the net force on the moving panel by about 10x.
Is the negative spring woofer a new idea?
No. The first patents date to 1955, and more than two dozen followed. RAD is the first to reach the market as a commercial product, thanks to active position sensing, magnetic bearings, a dedicated control system, and several other innovations.
How does RAD keep the speaker cone centered?
A four-axis passive magnetic bearing keeps the magnets centered radially. A high-excursion position sensor coupled with an active Lorentz force and active axial magnetic bearing keeps them centered axially.
What happens when a RAD speaker turns on?
When the speaker is off, the panel rests at one end of its travel. At startup, a small air pump moves it to center, then active position sensing takes over.
How much power does RAD save?
Brane X uses about 1/10th the power of a conventional speaker in the subwoofer range, while delivering a 10x increase in sub-bass.
What is the difference between RAD and RAD2?
RAD cancels air pressure forces. RAD2 also cancels inertia by tuning the driver's resonant frequency to the music in real time, delivering 30x deep-bass output per unit of size and power.
Which products use RAD?
Brane X runs on RAD. Future products will run on RAD2.
Can RAD scale to other product sizes?
Yes. Our research shows RAD can scale from earbuds to concert-size speakers while keeping an order-of-magnitude advantage in size and power consumption.
How does the Brane X produce deep bass from such a compact speaker?
Brane X produces deep bass using Brane Audio’s patented Repel-Attract Driver technology. RAD cancels the internal air-pressure forces that limit conventional speakers, allowing the subwoofer to produce deeper bass from a much smaller enclosure.
Getting started
How do I set up my Brane X for the first time?
- Plug the power adapter into an outlet and into the AC port on the back of the speaker. Your speaker arrives with some charge, but finishing setup on wall power keeps it from running out mid-process.
- Press the power button on the back of the speaker and wait for the launch sound.
- Download the Brane Audio app from the App Store or Google Play and create an account.
- Press the Bluetooth button on the Control Bar, then pair your phone with the speaker in your phone's Bluetooth settings. A solid blue light means the connection is made.
- Open the Brane Audio app. It discovers your speaker over Bluetooth if the speaker runs firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly, then update the firmware.
- To put the speaker on Wi-Fi, make sure your phone is on the network you want, tap the speaker in the speaker list and follow the onboarding instructions. If no Wi-Fi prompt appears, go to Network > Connect to Network.
When the speaker joins Wi-Fi, the white light turns solid. A new speaker may then start a firmware update on its own, which the yellow light shows. Wi-Fi is optional for Bluetooth and AUX playback and for changing settings, but AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Alexa, grouping and firmware updates need it.
You can also skip Bluetooth and add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly. Check that the front light is pulsing white (if it is purple, hold the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the speaker says "Wi-Fi ready to configure"), then tap the plus sign in the speaker list and follow the prompts. See How do I add my speaker to the Brane Audio app? for more.
What happens when I turn on my Brane X?
You will hear a short launch sound while the Repel-Attract Driver (RAD) starts up. This is normal on every power-on. On firmware 2.1 and later, all the lights on the front glow low-brightness white while the speaker boots. On earlier firmware you see a single solid white light.
Once it is ready, the speaker announces its battery level. It also announces the bass level unless bass is on High, which is the default. A speaker that has never been set up on Wi-Fi then says "Wi-Fi ready to configure," and its white light pulses. You can ignore this and pair your phone over Bluetooth instead.
The buttons on the Control Bar do not respond until the speaker is ready. The microphone mute button works at any time.
Does Brane Audio have an app for the Brane X?
Yes, the Brane X can be set up and managed through the Brane Audio app. Use the app to connect the Brane X to Wi-Fi, adjust EQ and bass levels, group multiple Brane X speakers, manage Amazon Alexa, and customize speaker settings.
Do I need the Brane Audio app to set up the Brane X?
Brane X does not require the Brane Audio app for basic Bluetooth or AUX playback. The app is needed to connect the speaker to Wi-Fi and access features such as custom EQ, speaker grouping, Alexa setup, network settings, and firmware updates.
Can I set up my speaker with an iPhone or an Android phone?
Yes, both iOS and Android phones are compatible. Download the Brane Audio app from the App Store or Play Store and follow the app onboarding instructions. The Brane X supports UPnP on Wi-Fi for Android users.
Recommended free apps: MediaMonkey, BubbleUPnP, and Hi-Fi Cast. For a more comprehensive experience, the paid app AirMusic ($5.99) streams content over UPnP, including Apple Music and Amazon Music.
How do I add my speaker to the Brane Audio app?
Connect via Bluetooth
First pair your mobile device to the speaker via Bluetooth. A solid blue light indicates that a Bluetooth connection has been established.
Setting up a brand-new speaker from the box? The first-time setup steps cover power, the Brane Audio app and Wi-Fi in order.
Download the Brane Audio app
The Brane Audio app will automatically discover your speaker over Bluetooth if it is running firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, add the speaker over Wi-Fi directly instead, then update the firmware. Once it is connected over Bluetooth, you can change the speaker's settings in the app even without Wi-Fi.
Connect Speaker to Wi-Fi (optional)
If your speaker has auto-joined app, it can now be added to your Wi-Fi network. Grouping and firmware updates need Wi-Fi, as do AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Alexa.
Make sure that your mobile device is connected to the Wi-Fi network that you would like to connect your speaker to.
In the speaker list, tap the speaker you would like to connect to Wi-Fi, then follow the onboarding instructions to connect it to your network.
If a Wi-Fi connection prompt does not show, navigate to Network > Connect to Network, and follow the onboarding instructions.
A solid white light will show on the front of the speaker after it has successfully connected to Wi-Fi. From this point on, the speaker will automatically join the network whenever possible.
For more information on connectivity with the Brane Audio app, view the Brane X user guide.
Or add it over Wi-Fi directly
If you prefer, skip Bluetooth and add the speaker over Wi-Fi. See How do I connect my speaker to Wi-Fi?
What do the speaker list, Groups and Resources tabs do in the Brane Audio app?
The Brane Audio app has three tabs along the bottom of the screen.
- The speaker list: view and add the Brane X speakers on your network. Open a speaker to see its settings, which are titled with the speaker's name.
- Groups: create and manage speaker groups on your Wi-Fi network. Tap Create New Group to start one. A group screen shows the group name, a Party and Stereo selector, the member speakers, a "Speaker not playing?" link and an End Group link.
- Resources: Product Warranty (Warranty Registration), Data & Privacy, Legal, Help & Contact and App Info. Help & Contact has the support email address, the Help Center and Submit Support Ticket.
Inside a speaker's settings you will find Ping Speaker, Network, Bluetooth, Sound Settings, EQ, Input Options, Voice Assistant, Streaming (which points you to Spotify), LED Brightness, Speaker Language, Accessibility, Firmware, Advanced Settings and Speaker Details, plus Reset Speaker, which shows the instructions for how to factory reset the speaker. See Factory reset your speaker.
You need the app to change settings, and that works over Bluetooth. Once your speaker is connected and configured, you do not need the app for everyday listening.
Why did my new Brane X start updating after I connected it to Wi-Fi?
A new speaker may not have the latest firmware. A few moments after it joins Wi-Fi for the first time, it checks for an update and starts installing it automatically. A solid yellow light shows while the update runs. It helps to keep the speaker plugged in.
The speaker restarts by itself when the update finishes, so do not worry if it turns off and on. When the yellow light is gone, your speaker is up to date. You can also check for updates yourself by opening your speaker in the Brane Audio app and going to Firmware.
What does Ping Speaker do?
Ping Speaker makes the speaker play a sound and flash its lights, so you can tell which speaker you have selected. This is useful when you have more than one Brane X. Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Ping Speaker.
Connectivity
Does the Brane X need Wi-Fi?
No, Brane X does not need Wi-Fi for Bluetooth playback or its 3.5mm AUX input, and the Brane Audio app can change speaker settings over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi is required for Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Alexa, multi-speaker grouping, and firmware updates.
How do I connect my speaker to Bluetooth?
- Turn the speaker on and press the Bluetooth button on the Control Bar. A pulsing blue light and a voice prompt tell you pairing mode is on.
- Open the Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet or computer and select your speaker. Until you rename it, it is called "Brane-" followed by its serial number.
- The light stops pulsing and stays solid blue, and the speaker announces that it is connected.
- Select the speaker as the output in your music app.
Pairing mode ends after 3 minutes. To disconnect, press the Bluetooth button while the device is connected (a short press, not a hold) or disconnect from your device's Bluetooth settings.
How do I connect my Brane X to Wi-Fi?
You can connect the Brane X to Wi-Fi through the Brane Audio app. First, make sure your phone is connected to your desired Wi-Fi network and paired with the Brane X via Bluetooth. Open the Brane Audio app, select your Brane X, and follow the setup instructions. If no setup prompt appears, go to Network > Connect to Network. Once connected, the Brane X's Wi-Fi indicator light will remain solid white and automatically reconnect to the network when powered on.
Can I add my speaker to Wi-Fi from my iPhone without the Brane Audio app?
Yes. Apple's AirPlay setup can add the speaker to your network.
- Put the speaker in Wi-Fi setup mode so the light pulses white.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap Wi-Fi.
- Look for "Set Up New AirPlay Speaker" below the nearby networks. It can take a few moments to appear.
- Select your Brane X and follow the prompts. A confirmation appears when it is done.
If the section does not appear after a few minutes, check that the white light is pulsing and that your phone is on your home Wi-Fi network. If it still does not appear, turn airplane mode on and off and look again.
What is the default Bluetooth name of my Brane X?
Until you rename it, your speaker shows up in your device's Bluetooth list as "Brane-" followed by its serial number.
To change it, tap the pencil icon next to the speaker's name at the top of its settings screen in the Brane Audio app. If you set the name during Apple's AirPlay setup, it can only be changed through Apple (see the question on a locked speaker name).
How long does Bluetooth pairing mode last?
Pairing mode only starts when you press the Bluetooth button, and a pulsing blue light shows while it is on. It ends when:
- a device pairs with the speaker,
- you press the Bluetooth button again, or
- three minutes pass.
If the timer runs out before you finish, press the Bluetooth button to start pairing again.
Can I connect more than one Bluetooth device to my Brane X at a time?
No. The speaker plays from one Bluetooth device at a time. If a second device connects, the first one is disconnected.
Your speaker can remember several paired devices. To switch, disconnect the current device or connect the one you want from its Bluetooth settings.
Will my Brane X reconnect to my phone automatically?
Yes. Auto-Connect is on by default, so the speaker tries to connect to the most recent Bluetooth device when it starts up. To check or change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Bluetooth > Auto-Connect.
If your device is not ready at that moment, Periodic Retry can help. It is off by default and available only when Auto-Connect is on. It keeps trying to reconnect after power-on. See What does Periodic Retry do? Otherwise, connect the device from its Bluetooth settings.
What does Periodic Retry do?
Periodic Retry makes the speaker keep trying to reconnect to your most recent Bluetooth device after it powers on, so it connects when that device becomes available. This helps if you use the speaker with a turntable or a TV over Bluetooth and want to avoid pairing again.
It is off by default. To turn it on, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Bluetooth > Periodic Retry. It is available only when Auto-Connect is on, and Auto-Connect is on by default. Auto-Connect lets the speaker try to connect to the most recent Bluetooth device when it starts up.
The speaker retries only when there is no active Bluetooth connection and no audio playing.
How do I disconnect a Bluetooth device or remove it from my speaker?
To disconnect, press the Bluetooth button on the speaker while a device is connected. A press disconnects the device, and holding the button for 5 seconds switches Wi-Fi setup mode instead. You can also disconnect from the device's Bluetooth settings.
To remove a device the speaker has paired with, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Bluetooth > Saved Devices. It lists the Bluetooth devices the speaker knows, and you can remove any of them. A factory reset also erases all paired devices.
How do I remove a saved Wi-Fi network from my speaker?
Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Network > Saved Networks. It lists the Wi-Fi networks the speaker has been set up with, and you can delete the ones you no longer want. To add a network, use Network > Connect to Network.
To clear everything, use a factory reset. It erases all saved Wi-Fi networks and paired Bluetooth devices, along with your settings.
How do I add or remove an AirPlay password?
When you add the speaker through Apple's setup or the Home app, Apple lets you set a password. Anyone who then tries to play to the speaker over AirPlay is asked for it.
To remove the password, remove the speaker from the Home app, or factory reset the speaker.
Can I take phone calls on the Brane X?
No. The Brane X plays audio from your device but does not support hands-free or headset calling over Bluetooth, so you cannot use it as a speakerphone. The microphones are for Alexa voice control.
Is the Brane X a Bluetooth speaker?
Yes, Brane X is a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi speaker. Its built-in rechargeable battery also allows you to listen without keeping the speaker connected to a power outlet.
Does the Brane X have Auracast?
No, Brane X does not currently support Auracast. Multi-speaker playback is handled over Wi-Fi through the Brane Audio app or through Apple AirPlay.
Listening
What music streaming services work with the Brane X?
The Brane X supports music streaming through Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa-compatible services, and UPnP playback over Wi-Fi.
When connected to Wi-Fi, Alexa supports services including Amazon Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, Deezer, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and Audible. Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, TIDAL, and other streaming apps can be played directly from your phone, tablet, or computer through AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth. TIDAL Connect is not currently supported.
The Brane X also supports UPnP playback over Wi-Fi and a 3.5mm AUX input for wired audio connections. The Brane Audio app is used to manage setup, EQ, speaker grouping, and settings rather than acting as a standalone music streaming service.
How do I listen using AirPlay?
In your phone's music player, tap the AirPlay icon at the bottom of the screen. Select your Brane speaker as the output device.
Note: The speaker must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.
How do I listen using Spotify?
Use your phone, tablet, or computer as a remote control for Spotify. Visit spotify.com/connect to learn more. Note: The speaker must be onboarded to the same Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.
How do I listen using UPnP?
UPnP lets a control app on your phone or computer send music from your library or a server to the speaker over Wi-Fi.
- Connect your speaker to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone or computer.
- Open a UPnP control app. Free options include BubbleUPnP, MediaMonkey and Hi-Fi Cast.
- Choose your Brane X as the output.
The speaker plays AAC-LC, FLAC, MP3, Opus and Vorbis files over UPnP. Use only one control app at a time, because several apps controlling one speaker can conflict.
How do I connect a record player or other wired source?
Plug a 3.5mm audio cable into the AUX port on the back of the speaker and into the output on your source. Turn on both devices.
If the source has no 3.5mm output, use an adapter that converts its output to 3.5mm. For a TV, see the TV setup questions.
Why won't my AUX source play?
The wired AUX input plays only when no wireless source is active. Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Alexa and UPnP all rank above it, whether or not Soundbar Mode is on.
- Disconnect any Bluetooth device.
- Stop AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Alexa and UPnP playback.
- Check that the cable is firmly seated at both ends and the source is on and turned up.
If the audio lags, turn on Soundbar Mode in the Brane Audio app under speaker settings > Input Options. A green light on the front means the mode is on and the speaker is receiving a wired signal. With the mode on and no green light, no signal is arriving.
What happens when two devices try to play to my speaker at once?
Wireless sources share one priority level, and the last one to start takes over. If AirPlay is playing and you start Spotify Connect, AirPlay stops and Spotify plays. The same goes for Bluetooth, Alexa and UPnP.
The speaker also accepts only one connection per type of source. A second Bluetooth device connecting, for example, disconnects the first.
The wired AUX input ranks below all of them, with or without Soundbar Mode. It plays only when no wireless source is active.
Groups and stereo
Can the Brane X connect to other speakers?
Yes, Brane X can connect to other speakers for stereo or multiroom playback. You can group multiple Brane X speakers through the Brane Audio app or connect it with AirPlay 2-compatible speakers using Apple AirPlay 2.
How many Brane X speakers can I connect?
Brane X supports grouping up to eight Brane X speakers over Wi-Fi. Speakers in a group play the same audio from one connection. The speakers can be organized into multiple groups or paired for left-and-right stereo playback.
Is the Brane X compatible with Sonos?
Brane X does not connect directly to the Sonos app or become part of a Sonos system. However, Apple users can select the Brane X and AirPlay 2-compatible Sonos speakers at the same time to stream the same audio across them.
How do I group multiple Brane X speakers?
You can group multiple Brane X speakers through the Groups tab in the Brane Audio app. Make sure each Brane X is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network, then tap Create New Group and select the speakers you want to include. Once grouped, choose Party Mode to play the same audio through every Brane X, or Stereo Mode to assign left and right audio channels for a stereo listening experience.
What is the difference between Party and Stereo?
Party and Stereo are the two ways a group of speakers can play. You choose between them with the Party / Stereo selector at the top of the group screen in the Brane Audio app.
- Party: every speaker in the group plays both the left and right channels.
- Stereo: each speaker has a slider that sets which channel it plays. For a stereo pair, set one speaker's slider to the left and the other's to the right.
To make a group, open Groups in the app, tap Create New Group and select the speakers on your network. See Play across multiple speakers.
How do I play the left and right channels on different speakers?
In the Brane Audio app, open Groups, tap Create New Group and select the speakers on your network. Then choose Stereo on the group screen. In Stereo, each speaker has a slider that sets which channel it plays. Set one speaker's slider to the left and the other's to the right, and you have a stereo pair.
In Party, every speaker in the group plays both the left and right channels.
How does volume work in a group?
Every speaker in a group shares one volume. Changing the volume on any speaker in the group changes it for all of them.
How does a group show up in AirPlay and Spotify?
A group appears under its group name rather than the individual speaker names. You connect once and every speaker in the group plays.
Only one speaker in the group advertises itself for AirPlay, Spotify Connect and UPnP, and which one can change depending on the order the speakers powered on. Alexa, Bluetooth and AUX can come from any speaker in the group.
A wired AUX source can feed a group, but not while Soundbar Mode is on. Soundbar Mode limits digital processing to cut delay, which removes the buffering that grouping needs. Only music is shared across a group. Voice prompts and Alexa speech play from the speaker that produces them.
How do I rename a group or change which speakers are in it?
Open the Groups tab in the Brane Audio app and open the group.
- Tap the pencil icon.
- Tap the group's name, type the new name and tap Done on the keyboard.
- Tick or untick speakers to change who is in the group.
- Tap the green checkmark to finish.
Only speakers connected to Wi-Fi can be grouped. If a speaker is missing from the list, see Why can't I find a speaker when I create or edit a group?
How do I remove one speaker from a group?
Open the Groups tab in the Brane Audio app and open the group. Then:
- Swipe the speaker to the left in the list of member speakers. You do not need to tap the pencil icon first.
- Tap Remove.
- When the app asks "Remove speaker from group?", tap Yes.
The other speakers stay in the group. You can also tap the pencil icon and untick the speaker, then tap the green checkmark.
How do I end a group?
Open the Groups tab in the Brane Audio app and open the group, then tap End Group. You can also swipe the group to the left on the main Groups page. Ending a group removes its speakers from it, and each speaker works on its own again as it did before.
If you only want to take one speaker out, see How do I remove one speaker from a group?
Why can't I find a speaker when I create or edit a group?
If your speaker is connected to the Brane Audio app via Bluetooth but does not have a network connection, the speaker will not appear in the list when creating or editing a group.
Only speakers that are connected to Wi-Fi can be grouped. This is indicated by an "Online" status on the speaker card and can be configured from the speaker's Network settings menu.
Why isn't my speaker playing in the group?
If your speaker is connected to the Brane Audio app via Bluetooth but does not have a network connection, it will not play to the group.
Only speakers that are connected to Wi-Fi can be grouped. This is indicated by an "Online" status on the speaker card. To connect the speaker, open it in the Brane Audio app, then go to Network > Connect to Network.
Why does one speaker in my group stop playing for a moment?
Every speaker syncs to the speaker that is receiving the audio. If one drifts out of sync, it stops playing until it catches up again.
Wireless interference and busy networks cause this. Bluetooth, AUX and older AirPlay sources are more affected because their audio arrives just in time to play, which leaves less room to recover.
Do I need Wi-Fi to pair multiple Brane X speakers?
Yes, Brane X speakers require Wi-Fi to pair and group together. Each speaker must be powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Is the Brane X a stereo speaker?
Yes, a single Brane X provides stereo separation through its dedicated left and right midrange channels. You can also pair two Brane X speakers for a wider, true left-and-right stereo setup.
TV setup
What is the best way to connect the Brane X to my TV?
Best Method: Apple TV box
An Apple TV box is the simplest wireless way to use the Brane X with a TV. It is an AirPlay sender, so it sends audio to the Brane X over your Wi-Fi network with no delay. Both must be on the same network.
- On the Apple TV, open Settings.
- Go to Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Choose your Brane X. A group appears under the group's name.
On tvOS 26 or later, the Apple TV keeps Brane X as its default audio output, including after sleep. On earlier tvOS the selection resets when the Apple TV sleeps, so update tvOS or select the speaker again. System alerts and game sounds still play through the TV's own speakers. To switch for one session, hold the TV button on the remote to open Control Center and select Audio Controls.
If the Brane X is not offered, check that its Wi-Fi light is solid white and that it is on the same network as the Apple TV, then update tvOS. Use the Apple TV box, not the Apple TV app on a TV. TVs that advertise AirPlay are receivers: they can play audio sent to them but cannot send audio to the Brane X. AirPlay carries only what the Apple TV itself plays, so for a game console, a disc player or the TV's built-in apps use Bluetooth or a cable.
Bluetooth Connection
Some TVs offer a Bluetooth speaker option in their audio menu, but Bluetooth has some delay built in. Depending on the TV, you may need to adjust its lip sync setting.
Physical Connection (Soundbar Mode)
Use the Brane Audio app to set your speaker to Soundbar Mode, previously called AUX Passthrough. Open your speaker, then go to Input Options > Soundbar Mode. This works over Bluetooth, so the speaker does not need Wi-Fi.
This mode minimizes time delays and ensures proper lip sync. Bluetooth and AirPlay still work, and they take priority over the wired input while they are playing. Leaving it on does not affect wireless sources or wireless groups. A wired source cannot play to a group while Soundbar Mode is on.
Connect the speaker to the 3.5mm headphone or AUX output of the TV. If the TV has no analog output, use an HDMI ARC audio extractor or an optical-to-analog converter (DAC). For the adapters, see Which adapters and cables do I need to connect the Brane X to my TV?
What is Soundbar Mode on the Brane X?
Soundbar Mode on the Brane X reduces audio delay when connected to a TV, computer, or other wired audio source through the AUX port, helping keep sound in sync with video playback. To enable Soundbar Mode, open the Brane Audio app, select your Brane X, and go to Input Options > Soundbar Mode. This feature only applies to wired AUX connections and does not affect Bluetooth or AirPlay playback.
Which adapters and cables do I need to connect the Brane X to my TV?
HDMI-to-AUX Converter
Recommended converter: HDMI to AUX Converter Box
Connect the converter to the TV's HDMI ARC/eARC port. This converter supports CEC volume control.
Optical-to-AUX Converter
Recommended converter: Optical to AUX Converter Box
Includes a volume remote for the optical connection.
Cables and Adapters
For One Speaker: Use a regular AUX Cable.
For Left/Right Speaker Pair: Use two RCA cables with these RCA to AUX adapters: RCA to AUX Adapter | RCA Cables
Which HDMI port do I use to get sound from my TV to the Brane X?
Use the HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. Usually only one port on the TV carries the label. Other HDMI ports do not send audio back out.
- Turn on ARC in the TV settings if your TV has that option.
- Use an HDMI cable rated 1.4 or higher.
- Turn on CEC if you want your TV remote to control the volume of an HDMI audio extractor.
Then connect the extractor to the speaker with a 3.5mm cable and turn on Soundbar Mode.
How do I set up two Brane X speakers as a stereo pair with my TV?
- Apple TV: create a Stereo group with the two speakers in the Brane Audio app (Groups > Create New Group) and set one speaker's slider to the left and the other's to the right. Then on the Apple TV go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output and choose the pair. It appears on the Apple TV as one AirPlay speaker under its group name, and you can choose it as the audio output, including as the default.
- Bluetooth: create the Stereo group in the app, the same way, then put one speaker in pairing mode and connect it from the TV.
- Wired: do not group the speakers, because a wired source cannot play to a group while Soundbar Mode is on. Take the left and right channels from the TV's RCA outputs, or from a 3.5mm-to-RCA splitter cable. Use RCA-to-3.5mm adapters to connect one channel to each speaker, then turn on Soundbar Mode on both.
A plain headphone splitter does not separate left and right, so it will not work.
How do I split one TV audio output into left and right for two speakers?
To split an AUX cable to separate left and right channels, do not use a simple AUX cable/headphone splitter, as it will not separate the channels. Instead, use this cable: Channel Splitter Cable (in combination with two of the RCA to AUX adapters linked above).
What is Max Volume in Soundbar Mode?
Max Volume sets the maximum volume for wired AUX audio in Soundbar Mode. In Soundbar Mode the volume is set at the source, so Max Volume decides how loud the speaker is when the source is at 100%.
To change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Input Options > Max Volume. It appears when Soundbar Mode is on. The default is 75%.
You can raise it above 75%, but a higher setting can let white noise (hiss) come through the speaker. If you hear hiss, lower Max Volume. The best setting depends on your setup, so adjust it while the source plays at your usual listening volume.
Why is the picture ahead of the sound when I use Bluetooth with my TV?
Bluetooth adds a small delay, so the sound arrives after the picture. Many TVs have a setting to compensate. Look in the TV's sound settings for options named "Lip Sync," "Wireless Delay" or "Latency Mode." Some TVs offer a slider so you can set the delay yourself.
If your TV has no such setting, use an Apple TV box over AirPlay or a wired connection in Soundbar Mode. Both avoid the delay.
When the TV sends its sound to the Brane X over Bluetooth, everything connected to the TV plays through the speaker.
Why do I get no sound, or a pop, from my HDMI or optical adapter?
Set your TV's audio output format to PCM. Many HDMI and optical audio adapters can read only PCM. On Automatic, many TVs send a compressed format such as Dolby that the adapter cannot decode, which causes a pop or click and then silence.
- Open your TV's audio settings and find the output format, called something like "Audio Format," "Output Format" or "Audio Type."
- Choose PCM. LPCM also works but is less common.
- Make sure the adapter is set to the input you are using, HDMI or optical.
- Turn on Soundbar Mode in the Brane Audio app, under speaker settings > Input Options.
If the TV's choices include Automatic, Passthrough, Dolby or 5.1, those are the settings to change. A solid green light on the speaker means Soundbar Mode is on and a wired signal is arriving. With the mode on and no green light, no signal is reaching the speaker.
Can I connect the Brane X to my TV?
Yes, the Brane X can connect to your TV through Bluetooth, a 3.5mm AUX cable, a compatible wired adapter, or AirPlay using an Apple TV box.
For the best audio and video synchronization (lip sync), we recommend a wired connection with Soundbar Mode enabled in the Brane Audio app under Input Options. This minimizes audio delay when using a wired source. If your TV doesn't have a 3.5mm audio output, you can use an HDMI ARC audio extractor or optical-to-analog adapter.
For wireless connections, you can pair the Brane X directly with a Bluetooth-compatible TV or use AirPlay through an Apple TV box connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Bluetooth connections may introduce some audio delay depending on your TV.
Speaker features
What do the lights on the Brane X mean?
Brane X lights show its connection, charging, update, reset, and voice-assistant status. Blue indicates Bluetooth activity, white and yellow are used for Wi-Fi and updates, orange shows charging, cyan relates to Alexa, and red usually indicates muted microphones or an error.
Why does the Brane X make a sound when it turns on or off?
The Brane X makes a brief mechanical sound when turning on or off because an internal air pump moves its patented Repel-Attract Driver (RAD) subwoofer between parked and operating positions. This sound is a normal part of the RAD system, which uses magnetic forces to enable the Brane X's powerful, deep bass performance.
How do I change the name of my Brane X?
You can rename your Brane X through the Brane Audio app. Select your Brane X from the Speaker List, tap the pencil icon next to its current name, enter a new name, and tap Done or outside the field to save your changes. If your Brane X was named through Apple Home, you'll need to rename it in the Apple Home app instead.
Why can't I change my speaker's name in the Brane Audio app?
If you named the speaker during Apple's AirPlay setup or in the Home app, the name is locked to Apple. The Brane Audio app blocks edits so that Apple does not later overwrite the name you typed. A lock icon appears at the top of the speaker's settings screen where the pencil icon would be.
Rename the speaker in the Apple Home app. A factory reset removes the lock, after which you can name the speaker in the Brane Audio app when you set it up again.
What do the bass levels do?
The Bass button switches between three presets: Low (-4 dB), Medium (0 dB) and High (+4 dB). A higher level gives more rumble and a louder sound but uses more battery. A new speaker is on High.
Press Bass once to hear the current level. Press again within 15 seconds to move to the next level, and keep pressing to cycle Low, Medium, High and back to Low. If your speaker has a different bass level than you expected, this is how to set it.
You can also set the level in the Brane Audio app. Open your speaker, then go to Sound Settings > Bass and choose Low, Medium or High. If you have set a custom bass level in EQ, Sound Settings shows a note that changing Bass there overrides your current EQ settings, with a link to EQ. If Voice Announcements is off, the Bass button changes the level only when music is playing.
How do I reset the EQ?
Hold the Bass button for 5 seconds. The speaker says "EQ reset." On firmware 2.1 and later this returns the bass to High. On earlier firmware it returns the EQ to flat, which is Medium bass.
If you have changed the EQ in the Brane Audio app, the speaker announces "Custom EQ" at power-on to remind you.
What does Stereo Enhancement do?
Stereo Enhancement adjusts the apparent separation between the left and right audio channels. A higher setting gives a wider soundstage and more separation. A lower setting gives a more focused sound. It is set to 0 by default.
To change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Sound Settings > Stereo Enhancement. Turn it on or off with the toggle and set the level with the slider. The info button explains the setting.
How do I turn the Brane X voice prompts on or off?
You can turn the Brane X voice prompts on or off through the Brane Audio app under Advanced Settings > Voice Announcements. When disabled, most automatic voice announcements, including the battery level announced at startup, are silenced. However, manually triggered prompts, such as requesting the battery level or entering Bluetooth pairing mode, will still play.
How do I change how bright the lights on my Brane X are?
Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to LED Brightness > Brightness Level and choose High, Normal or Low.
With High or Normal, the lights dim to the Low level after about eight seconds. They brighten again whenever a light changes, so new signals are easy to see.
What does Accessibility Mode do?
Accessibility Mode modifies how the touch buttons behave and turns on additional voice prompts. To change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Accessibility and turn it on or off.
With it on, pressing a button announces its name and engages it. The button disengages after you press another button. While a button is engaged:
- Double-tap it for its press behavior.
- Double-tap and hold it for its press-and-hold behavior.
- Press and hold it for its current status.
Voice control
Is the Brane X a smart speaker with Alexa?
Yes, Brane X is a smart speaker with Alexa Built-in. Alexa works when the speaker is connected to Wi-Fi, and the microphones can be physically muted at any time.
How do I set up Amazon Alexa on the Brane X?
You can set up Amazon Alexa on the Brane X through the Brane Audio app. Make sure your Brane X is connected to Wi-Fi and the microphones are enabled. Open the Brane Audio app, select your Brane X from the Speaker List, tap Voice Assistant, and follow the prompts to connect your Amazon account.
How can I tell if the microphones are muted?
A red light on the top of the speaker indicates the mics are disabled. Press the Microphone Mute button to enable them (the red light will turn off).
How do I turn off the microphone and Alexa on the Brane X?
You can turn off the microphones and Amazon Alexa voice controls on the Brane X by pressing the Microphone Mute button on top of the Brane X. A red indicator light confirms the microphones are disabled and the Brane X is no longer listening for voice commands. Voice controls remain disabled until you press the button again to unmute the microphones.
What do the Alexa lights mean?
- Solid cyan: Alexa is listening.
- Cyan and blue, fast: Alexa is thinking.
- Cyan and blue, slow: Alexa is speaking. Press the Alexa button or say "Alexa" and then "Stop" to interrupt.
- Pulsing yellow: you have a notification. Say "Alexa, what did I miss?"
- Two cyan pulses then two blue: a timer or alarm is going off.
- One purple pulse after Alexa finishes: Do Not Disturb is on.
- Three red pulses: an error. See "Why does the Alexa light pulse red three times?"
Why does the Alexa light pulse red three times?
The speaker pulses red three times when you press the Alexa button or say "Alexa" and Alexa cannot respond. The usual causes are:
- Alexa is not set up on the speaker. The speaker also says "Open the Brane app to setup the voice assistant."
- The speaker has no internet connection, so it cannot reach Alexa.
- The microphones are muted and you pressed the Alexa button.
Set up Alexa in the Brane Audio app, check the speaker's Wi-Fi light, or press the Mic button so the red light goes off.
How do I stop or adjust an Alexa timer or alarm?
Press the Alexa button or say "Alexa, stop" to silence a timer or alarm that is sounding.
Alarms have their own volume, separate from music volume, and it cannot be muted. Change it in the Alexa app, or press the volume buttons on the speaker while an alarm is sounding. In the Alexa app you can also have an alarm rise gradually from quiet over one minute.
What is Alexa Do Not Disturb on the Brane X?
Do Not Disturb silences Alexa notifications. Turn it on by voice or in the Alexa app. It is off by default. When it is on, the Alexa light gives one purple pulse at the end of each interaction.
Which languages does the Brane X support?
Alexa on the Brane X currently supports English (US).
The speaker's own voice prompts, such as battery level and "Bluetooth pairing mode," are separate. On firmware 2.1 and later you can choose English (US), French, German or Spanish (Spain). Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Speaker Language. Changing the voice prompt language does not change Alexa.
Battery, power and durability
How long does the Brane X battery last?
Brane X battery lasts up to 12 hours on a full charge at moderate volume. It fully recharges in approximately three hours, and you can continue listening while it charges.
How do I hear the remaining battery life of my Brane X?
You can hear the remaining battery level of your Brane X by pressing both volume (+ and –) buttons simultaneously. The Brane X will announce its current battery percentage. The Brane X also automatically announces its battery level when powered on.
How do I know when my Brane X is fully charged?
The Brane X is fully charged when the orange charging indicator light on the front of the Brane X turns off while the power adapter is connected. A solid orange light means the battery is charging, while no light indicates charging is complete. The charging indicator works even when the Brane X is powered off.
Can I leave my Brane X plugged in and on all the time?
Yes. You can use the speaker while it is plugged in, and it is fine to leave it on and plugged in all the time. When the adapter is plugged in, the speaker runs from it rather than the battery, and it will not harm the battery. The idle shutdown does not apply while it is on wall power. The battery charges faster when the speaker is not playing.
If the speaker stays in one place, such as with a TV, consider turning on Park RAD on Idle, which is off by default. Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Advanced Settings > Park RAD on Idle. When it is on, the RAD depressurizes and parks after 5 minutes idle, which reduces power draw. When it is off, the speaker stays pressurized while it is powered on. See What does Park RAD on Idle do?
Why did my Brane X turn itself off?
The speaker powers off on its own in three cases:
- Idle on battery: it played no audio for 30 minutes while on battery. This saves charge and does not apply while plugged in.
- Low battery: the battery is low. A speaker playing loudly may shut down, and then play a while longer at a lower volume after you power it back on. It says "Battery low shutdown" first. Plug it in to recharge.
- High temperature: the speaker got too hot. It lowers its volume first and shuts down only as a last resort, saying "High temperature shutdown." Move it somewhere cooler and out of direct sun, then turn it on again.
What does Park RAD on Idle do?
Park RAD on Idle controls whether the RAD stays launched when the speaker is not in use. It is off by default. To change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Advanced Settings > Park RAD on Idle.
When it is off, the speaker stays pressurized while it is powered on. When it is on, the RAD depressurizes and parks itself after 5 minutes idle. Starting playback launches the RAD again, but bass is reduced until it finishes pressurizing. Parking the RAD reduces power draw, so the setting matters mostly if you leave the speaker plugged in and turned on.
Is the Brane X waterproof and dustproof?
The Brane X has an IP57 water- and dust-resistance rating. Its sealed enclosure protects it against dust and temporary submersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, making it suitable for poolside, outdoor, beach, and kitchen use.
Does the Brane X float?
Yes, Brane X floats. Its sealed enclosure keeps it buoyant when the speaker is turned on, so it can rest on the surface of the water without sinking.
What temperatures can the Brane X work in?
The Brane X is designed to operate from 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F). Store it between -25 and 60 °C (-13 to 140 °F). If it gets too hot in use, it lowers its volume and then shuts itself down to protect itself.
Is the Brane X energy efficient?
Yes, the Brane X is designed to deliver powerful, deep bass with exceptional energy efficiency, using approximately 1/10th the power of conventional compact speakers in the subwoofer frequency range while producing up to 10 times more sub-bass than comparable speakers. This is made possible by Brane Audio's patented Repel-Attract Driver (RAD) technology, which reduces the power needed to produce deep bass in a compact design.
Troubleshooting
How do I update my Brane X?
The Brane X automatically checks for and installs firmware updates when connected to Wi-Fi. To manually check for updates, open the Brane Audio app, select your Brane X, and go to Firmware > Check for Update. If an update is available, follow the instructions to install it. Make sure your Brane X is connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into its power adapter before updating.
What does the solid yellow light mean?
A solid yellow light on the front means a firmware update is installing. The speaker restarts when the update finishes, and the light goes out. A red light for 5 seconds means the update failed. Plugging the speaker in before an update is recommended.
Updates are automatic by default. The speaker checks no more than once a week. In the Brane Audio app, open your speaker and go to Firmware > Advanced Options. Auto Update Firmware turns automatic updates on or off, and Only Idle Updates limits them to times when the speaker is idle.
How do I factory reset my Brane X?
You can factory reset the Brane X by pressing and holding both volume (+ and –) buttons for approximately 15 seconds until you hear "Factory reset initiated." Make sure your Brane X is powered on and connected to its power adapter before starting. A factory reset erases saved settings, Wi-Fi networks, and paired Bluetooth devices, returning the Brane X to its original setup state. The process may take approximately 15 minutes and is complete when the yellow-orange indicator light turns off. Once finished, you'll need to set up your Brane X again through the Brane Audio app.
Why didn't my factory reset start?
- Plug the speaker into wall power. On firmware 2.0 and later it can also reset on battery if the battery is above 75%.
- Keep holding both volume buttons until the speaker says "Factory reset initiated." If you let go during the countdown, it says "Factory reset aborted."
- If it says a factory reset is blocked on a firmware update, wait for the yellow light to turn off and try again.
- If it says a reset is already in progress, leave it alone. It takes about 15 minutes.
The reset may need to download its install files, so keep Wi-Fi available.
How do I force my speaker to turn off?
Press and hold the power button on the back of the speaker for 10 seconds. The speaker powers off, even if it is not responding.
Use this if the speaker is stuck during start-up and the three white lights never go away, if it seems not to turn on, or if it is frozen. Then press the power button again to turn it on.
Why can't the Brane Audio app find my speaker over Bluetooth?
The Brane Audio app finds your speaker over Bluetooth once your phone is paired with it. Check that the Bluetooth light on the speaker is solid blue. The app finds a speaker over Bluetooth only when the speaker runs firmware 2.5 or later. On older firmware, or if the app still does not pick up the speaker, follow the steps below to add it over your Wi-Fi network instead, then update the firmware.
Enable the Access Point
Make sure that your mobile device is connected to the Wi-Fi network that you would like to connect your speaker to.
If you do not already see a pulsing white light on the front of the speaker, press and hold the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the light begins pulsing. This indicates that the speaker's Wi-Fi access point is enabled and discoverable from the Brane Audio app.
Adding a Speaker Manually
Tap the green plus button in the app, then follow the onboarding instructions to add your speaker.
After the speaker has successfully joined the network, the white light will stop pulsing and remain solid white. From this point on, the speaker will automatically join the network whenever possible.
Now that the speaker is online, it will automatically undergo a firmware update (when Auto Update Firmware is on, under Firmware > Advanced Options).
For more information on connectivity with the Brane Audio app, view the Brane X user guide.
If the app still cannot find the speaker
Turn airplane mode on, then off, to clear your phone's network cache, and search again. If that does not help, try Apple's setup in iPhone Settings under Wi-Fi (see Can I add my speaker to Wi-Fi from my iPhone without the Brane Audio app?), or contact support.
Why isn't the white light pulsing during setup?
If you do not see the pulsing white light, press and hold the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds until the white light on the front of the speaker begins pulsing.
Why can't my iPhone find my speaker during AirPlay setup?
If you experience the AirPlay setup process stalling or unable to find your speaker after more than 10 seconds, turn airplane mode on and off again and try the connection process again.
Why does my speaker have a different bass level, volume or saved devices than I expected?
- Bass: press the Bass button to hear the level, then press again to change it. Hold Bass for 5 seconds to reset the EQ. You can also set the bass in the Brane Audio app under Sound Settings > Bass.
- Volume: set it with the volume buttons on the speaker.
- Bluetooth devices or Wi-Fi networks you do not recognize: open your speaker in the Brane Audio app and remove them under Bluetooth > Saved Devices or Network > Saved Networks.
A factory reset returns everything to the out-of-box state.
Where do I find my speaker's serial number, firmware version and MAC address?
Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app, then go to Speaker Details, near the bottom of the settings list. It shows the Product Model, Serial Number, Firmware Version, Wi-Fi MAC Address and Bluetooth MAC Address.
- Network also shows the IPv4 address, the IPv6 address and the Wi-Fi MAC address.
- Bluetooth shows the Bluetooth MAC address.
- Firmware shows the Firmware Version and Firmware Publish Date.
Until you rename it, the speaker appears in Bluetooth lists as "Brane-" followed by its serial number. Have the serial number ready when you register the warranty or contact support.
How do I contact support from the Brane Audio app?
Open the Resources tab in the Brane Audio app and tap Help & Contact. You can:
- Email Product Support at support@braneaudio.com.
- Open the Help Center.
- Tap Submit Support Ticket.
Have your speaker's serial number ready. To find it, open your speaker and go to Speaker Details.

Audio basics
Audio basics
What makes a speaker loud?
A speaker's loudness depends on how efficiently it converts electrical power into sound and how much air its drivers can move. Amplifier power, driver size and excursion, enclosure design, sensitivity, and distortion control all affect how loudly it can play.
Why do speakers distort?
Speakers distort when their drivers, amplifiers, or enclosures are pushed beyond the level they can reproduce cleanly. This often happens at high volume or when a small driver is asked to produce more deep bass than it can physically handle.
What causes bass distortion?
Bass distortion is usually caused by a driver reaching its excursion, power, or enclosure limits while trying to move enough air for low frequencies. When the system can no longer control the driver accurately, the bass may sound boomy, compressed, or broken up.
Can a portable speaker produce subwoofer bass?
Yes, a portable speaker can produce true subwoofer bass when its driver and enclosure are engineered to overcome the usual size and power limitations. Brane X uses Repel-Attract Driver technology to reach down to 27.1 Hz from a compact portable enclosure.
What speaker has the deepest bass for its size?
Brane X reaches down to 27.1 Hz, which is unusually deep for a portable speaker of its size. Brane Audio's published comparisons show it reproducing substantially more of the sub-bass range than the compact speakers included in its field testing.

Who founded Brane Audio?
Brane Audio was founded by Joseph Pinkerton, David Badger, Dr. William Lackowski, and Dr. Neil Everett.
Why is the company called Brane Audio?
The name Brane is a shortened, phonetic spelling of the word “membrane.” The company’s founders originally experimented with graphene membrane switches for clean-energy devices before applying the technology to audio.
