Connect over Bluetooth

Updated Nov 1, 2026

In this article

Bluetooth needs no Wi-Fi and no app, which makes it the easiest way to use Brane X outdoors and away from home. It is also the first step of setup: once your phone is paired, the Brane Audio app finds the speaker over Bluetooth (firmware 2.5 or later).

Pair a device

  1. Turn the speaker on and wait for it to finish starting up.
  2. Check for a pulsing blue light. If there isn’t one present, press the Bluetooth button, the first button on the left of the Control Bar. The speaker says “Bluetooth pairing mode” and the blue light on the front starts pulsing.
  3. On your device, open the Bluetooth settings and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  4. Select your speaker in the list of available devices.
  5. Wait for the speaker to announce that Bluetooth is connected. The blue light stops pulsing and stays solid.
  6. Play something. If you hear nothing, check that the speaker is selected as the audio output on your device.

The speaker’s name

Unless you have renamed it, your speaker appears as “Brane-” followed by its serial number. You can rename it in the Brane Audio app.

Pairing mode

Pairing mode is on by default for a new speaker with no saved connections, or turned on via pressing the Bluetooth button. It ends when a device pairs, when you press the Bluetooth button a second time, or by itself after three minutes. If the blue light has stopped pulsing before you connected, press the button again.

Use the Brane Audio app over Bluetooth

With your phone connected to the speaker over Bluetooth, the Brane Audio app shows the speaker and lets you change its settings, with or without Wi-Fi. Speaker groups and firmware updates are the exceptions: both need the speaker on Wi-Fi. See Connect to Wi-Fi.

Disconnect

Use either of these:

  • Press the Bluetooth button on the speaker while a device is connected. The speaker says “Bluetooth disconnected”.
  • Disconnect from the Bluetooth settings on your device.

A short press is enough. Holding the Bluetooth button for 5 seconds or longer switches Wi-Fi setup mode on or off instead.

One device at a time

Brane X plays from one Bluetooth device at a time. If a second device connects, the first one is disconnected.

Automatic reconnection

Auto-Connect is on by default. With it on, the speaker tries to connect to the most recent Bluetooth device when it starts up. To change it, open your speaker in the Brane Audio app and go to Bluetooth > Auto-Connect. If that device is out of range or has Bluetooth off, connect from the device’s Bluetooth settings instead.

Periodic Retry

Bluetooth > Periodic Retry is off by default and available only while Auto-Connect is on. The speaker keeps trying to reconnect to the most recent device after it powers on, so it connects once that device becomes available. This helps if you use the speaker with a turntable or a TV over Bluetooth and want to avoid pairing again. It only retries while there is no active Bluetooth connection and no audio playing.

Forget a device

Open your speaker in the Brane Audio app and go to Bluetooth > Saved Devices. It lists every Bluetooth device the speaker has paired with and lets you remove any of them. Use this if the speaker keeps reconnecting to a device you no longer use, or if you see a device you do not recognize. See Speaker settings in the Brane Audio app.

Good to know

  • Codecs. Brane X supports the SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX HD Bluetooth codecs (aptX and aptX HD on firmware 2.0 and later).
  • Volume. You can change the volume from your device or with the buttons on the speaker.
  • No phone calls. Brane X plays media over Bluetooth. It does not work as a speakerphone, so call audio stays on your phone.
  • Video. Bluetooth adds a short delay, which can show up as lip-sync lag with video. Video devices that support Bluetooth speakers often account for this delay by default, or have a setting that adjusts the delay, see Connect Brane X to your TV.
