How audio sources take turns

Updated Nov 1, 2026

In this article

Your Brane X accepts audio from several sources. This article explains which one plays when more than one tries to.

Sources your speaker plays

  • AirPlay
  • Alexa
  • Bluetooth
  • AUX (the 3.5mm input on the back)
  • Spotify
  • UPnP
  • Any of the above, played from another Brane X in a group

Among wireless sources, the last one wins

Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify, Alexa and UPnP all have the same priority. When one of them starts to play, it takes over from the one that was playing. For example, if AirPlay is playing and you start Spotify, AirPlay stops and Spotify plays.

AUX waits for wireless sources

Every wireless source has priority over the wired AUX input. AUX plays only when no wireless source is active on the speaker. If AUX is silent, stop or disconnect the wireless sources first.

This is the same whether Soundbar Mode (previously called AUX Passthrough) is on or off. See Use Soundbar Mode.

One connection per source type

The speaker takes one connection from each type of source. If you connect a second Bluetooth device, the first is disconnected. UPnP apps can technically connect more than once, but the speaker does not coordinate them, so we do not recommend sharing it that way.

In a group

Groups follow the same rules. AirPlay, Spotify and UPnP appear under the group name. Bluetooth, AUX and Alexa can start from any speaker in the group. The one limit is Soundbar Mode: a wired source can feed a group only while Soundbar Mode is off. Wireless sources and wireless groups are not affected by the mode. See Play across multiple speakers.
